Members of the District of Columbia National Guard were stationed in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington as a peaceful protest took place steps away.

The decision to deploy so many troops to the site was ordered by Attorney General William P. Barr, according to a senior official with the National Park Service. The park superintendent was not notified ahead of time, the official also said.

The Park Service has been told to expect a more militarized presence around its sites but it remains unclear what else that might look like.
