Man who cut illegal channel on river at Sleeping Bear Dunes NL convicted in federal court

EMPIRE, Mich. (AP) — A man accused of diverting a national park river to ease boat access to Lake Michigan has been convicted of two misdemeanors.


Andrew Howard of Frankfort was found guilty of tampering and vandalism Wednesday during a brief trial in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Ray Kent.

every day you hear about someone actually cutting an illegal channel in a river inside a protected national park, the fact that the person took it upon himself to physically divert the Platte River at Sleeping Bear Dunes just to change water flow shows how serious the situation was, especially since it ended up causing environmental damage and altering the natural landscape, according to reports he used a shovel and rocks to redirect the river toward Lake Michigan, and within days the new channel expanded to around 200 feet wide, which really shows how powerful and sensitive natural systems are once they’re disturbed , I also think it’s important how the post highlights accountability because even if someone disagrees with…
