Fishing industry group can sue USNPS over ban in Golden Gate NRA waters

A fishing organization can sue the federal government for banning commercial herring fishing on coastal San Francisco Bay waters that are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.

The lawsuit by the San Francisco Herring Association contends federal regulations, which prohibit commercial fishing in national parks, do not authorize the National Park Service to prohibit herring catches in the GGNRA. That area extends offshore from Fort Mason to Ocean Beach on the San Francisco side of the bay, from Sausalito past Point Bonita on the Marin County side, and around Alcatraz Island.
