Donors pledge US$72M for park renovation project in Presidio of San Francisco

Twenty-eight years ago, a landscape architect named Michael Painter looked at Doyle Drive, which slashed through the Presidio on its way to the Golden Gate Bridge, and envisioned replacing it with a road that would blend in with the parkland around it while also offering unbroken views of the San Francisco Bay.

Painter’s vision has come to life with the 14-acre Tunnel Tops park, which is in the early stages of construction on top of the Presidio Parkway, the road that replaced Doyle Drive in 2015. Buildout is expected to last through 2021 and will cost upwards of $90 million.
