Gary Everhardt was born just a year before the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s construction and led a life that will forever be entwined with famous scenic byway.
Everhardt, a former director of the National Park Service and the superintendent of the parkway from 1977-2000, died Dec. 27 in Charlotte at age 86. It was four days after his wife, Nancy Everhardt died, according to Phil Francis, a close friend and former parkway superintendent.
