New research from scientists in Nepal confirms that ice and snow in the world’s highest mountains are disappearing as a result of rising temperatures and at a faster pace than previously thought. The report from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development in Kathmandu finds that glaciers in the Hindu Kush and Himalaya mountain range region melted 65 percent faster from 2010 through 2019 than in the previous decade.

The finding adds to a growing body of evidence that the consequences of climate change are speeding up, and that some changes will be irreversible.

An archaeological site near Madison Street and the 10th Street rail corridor meets all four criteria necessary to be eligible for inclusion in the National Park Service to commemorate the 1908 Springfield Race Riot, federal officials said June 13.

The announcement was an important next step in the effort to persuade Congress to pass a bill that President Joe Biden could sign into law as soon as this year to give the site a national designation, according to Teresa Haley, president of the Springfield NAACP and Illinois State Conference NAACP.

A warming climate has claimed three more glaciers in Washington state. All three were on Mount Rainier, which is home to more ice than any U.S. mountain south of Alaska.

Scientists with the National Park Service say that Stevens Glacier was gone as of 2021.
