This fall, the National Park Service embarked upon a colossal effort to replant six groves of giant sequoias that burned in wildfires in California’s southern Sierra Nevada, an endeavor that park officials say is necessary to ensure a future for the climate-threatened trees.


On Friday, a handful of conservation groups filed suit to stop the work.

Commercial air tours will be banned over Badlands National Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial under plans completed by the National Park Service.


The parks, both located in South Dakota, and Glacier National Park in Montana are three that have chosen to either ban the flights immediately or phase them out over time.

The federal government and the Pacheedaht First Nation celebrated an agreement Wednesday to return stewardship control over territory taken without permission to create B.C.’s world-renowned Pacific Rim National Park.


Parks Canada and the Pacheedaht signed a deal returning land use and stewardship rights for a 2.6-hectare stretch of Middle Beach as a step in the treaty settlement process.
