DR Congo | For first time, government grants some communities legal control over home forests

Five communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the more than 10,000 residents who call them home, now have legal control of the forests on which they depend.


For the first time, government officials in DRC’s Equateur province signed off on applications by communities to manage sections of the country’s forests, covering about 300 square kilometers (116 square miles).
